Downtown Ocala becomes an open-air gallery October 24 and 25 as the 59th annual Ocala Fine Arts Festival returns to the city center. Organized by Fine Arts for Ocala (FAFO), the free weekend brings more than 140 artists together with performances, student art and food trucks. It is a show worth approaching slowly: the breadth of work is the attraction.

A city-center gallery without walls
FAFO’s lineup spans painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, glass, fiber, wood and mixed media. That range makes the walk through downtown more than a search for a particular style. A painted landscape may lead to a sculptural form; a photograph may sharpen your eye for the color in the next booth. The festival lists $27,000 in awards across artistic categories, but visitors do not need to know the judging criteria to enjoy comparing the makers’ approaches.
The setting matters, too. Instead of a single exhibition hall, the festival unfolds through downtown streets and around the square. Allow time for a first pass, then return to work that stays in your mind. Look closely at materials and finish, and ask artists how a piece took shape. Student artwork and local performances add another layer to the weekend, while food trucks make it easy to take a break between rounds.
Photography among the makers
Artistic Creationz is among the artists planning to exhibit, according to its upcoming-shows calendar. The Tampa-based photography partnership of Neal Nachman and Liz Stokes brings images rooted in wildlife, landscapes and other real places. Seeing a finished photograph in person can make its scale, surface and presentation clearer than a small screen does. Their booth will be one stop in a festival built for exploring many disciplines; individual displays and placements may change.
